The teaching of Phonics

School uses the Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme.  Each child receives as a minimum,  a daily 20 minute phonics session.  From the earliest start in Reception, children work in different groups to secure and challenge their phonics skills.  By the time children complete the phonics screening check in Year 1,  the vast majority of children meet the threshold.
Over time,  our phonics outcomes have shown improvement
2014 - 84% of children met the required standard
2015 - 87% of children met the required standard
2016 - 90% of children met the required standard
2017 - 90% of children met the required standard
Pupils who do not meet the standard by the end of Year 1 are assessed again at the end of Year 2
Year 2 outcomes for pupils meeting the standard are as follows:-
2015 -  97% - national average 90%
2016  - 94% - national average 91%
2017 - 97% 0 national average 90%
All of the above outcomes exceed the national averages.
Mrs Burnham is our phonics leader in school.  She can be contacted for any advice or guidance.  In the Autumn term each year, she delivers a phonics awareness session for Reception class parents.
School continues to support other schools to develop their phonics practice.
