Head Teacher's Welcome
Welcome to St Stephen's Catholic Primary School. We serve the communities of Longford and Orford. Our parish church is just next door. We are a Catholic School where the gospel values included in our Mission Statement are at the heart of all we do.
Already, I know how delightful the children, how dedicated the staff, how supportive the parents and how skillful the governors are who make up our school community. Much of this is down to the tireless work of Mrs McGarry in her time as headteacher - quite an act to follow!
St Stephen's Catholic Primary School offers a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum which is underpinned by the key skills of speaking and listening, reading, writing and mathematics. Teachers use every opportunity to develop reading, writing and mathematics across all subject areas. Reading is given a high priority in this school. Children are heard read at least three times a week by staff with an enjoyable and effective Reading Buddy Scheme in operation.
Our learning challenge curriculum provides a creative and themed approach to our children's learning. We are a Children's University School and as such offer a range of extra curricular activities to help children achieve their University awards. Extra curricular clubs currently include gardening, cooking, art, craft, ICT, board games, dance, athletics, boxing, football and girls' rugby. In addition, school also provides gospel singing for Year 6. Children in Year 3 and 4 enjoy swimming lessons at the new Orford Jubilee Centre. School takes part in a range of sporting events and tournaments.
Learning experiences for our children are enhanced through visits and trips including residential experiences. Children enjoy our Step Up Day, Enterprise Weeks and organise very effective fundraising events for local, national and global charities. We have had links with a number of schools in other countries and are looking to extend this. All children learn French right from our Reception class.
As Mrs McGarry has stated, we aim to provide all children with skills, knowledge, understanding and enriched experiences so that they can become successful and responsible citizens of the future, leading happy and fulfilled lives.
